Saudi and UAE Deposits With the State Bank Quietly Support the Rupee in Forex Currency Trading Posted on November 5, 2026 By Michael Wilson Reserve figures published each week by the State Bank of Pakistan reflect more than the country’s trade earnings. Part of the total comes from deposits placed by friendly governments, most prominently Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Together, those two countries have parked several billion dollars at the central bank in recent years, and the deposits often attract attention when their renewal is uncertain. Mechanically, the arrangements are simple. A sovereign lender places dollars with the State Bank under agreed terms, which may include interest payments. The funds count toward gross reserves, improving import cover ratios and the headline numbers that rating agencies and investors monitor. When a deposit matures, Pakistan may seek its rollover rather than repayment, and that expectation has been met repeatedly, sometimes around IMF reviews. Participants in forex currency trading involving the rupee pay close attention to these arrangements. Market psychology is where the deposits do most of their work. Participants trading the rupee pay close attention to reserve levels, since a central bank with thin buffers has limited ability to smooth volatility or meet debt payments. The presence of Gulf deposits signals that Pakistan has received financial support from regional partners, which tempers fears of a disorderly slide even when other indicators look weak. In practical terms, the money does not need to be spent to be effective. Rollover announcements function as minor market events. Reports that Riyadh or Abu Dhabi has agreed to extend a deposit may ease concerns about reserve levels, while delays or ambiguous statements may increase uncertainty about future dollar availability. The International Monetary Fund has also sought financing assurances from bilateral partners, including commitments involving deposit rollovers, linking the Gulf commitments directly to the disbursement calendar that rupee watchers already follow closely. Critics raise concerns that extend beyond the exchange rate. Borrowed reserves are not the same as earned ones, and a reserve position heavily dependent on bilateral deposits may reflect continued external financial support rather than stronger underlying economic conditions. Interest payments add to external debt-servicing costs, and the arrangements leave Pakistan exposed to shifts in regional politics, even if those risks have not materialized in recent years. Saudi support also arrives in forms other than deposits. Deferred oil payment facilities, when available, let Pakistan import oil and pay for it later. This reduces the immediate need for dollars in the interbank market during periods of financial difficulty. Along with the deposits, these arrangements can help ease pressure on the rupee when foreign currency is in short supply. Pakistan still has to pay for the oil when the agreed payment date arrives, so the relief is temporary. Ordinary participants in forex currency trading rarely see these flows directly, yet their influence remains relevant to assessments of where the rupee is headed. Stability built partly on friendly deposits can last for years, provided rollovers continue and the broader economy gradually strengthens its own foundations. The deeper question is how much of today’s calm would survive if the support were ever withdrawn. Business Deposits
