Do Mobile Mechanics Need Specialist Cover?

Do Mobile Mechanics Need Specialist Cover?

Posted on July 30, 2026 By Michael Wilson

The business vehicle is central to the work. It carries tools, parts, diagnostic equipment, batteries, jacks and safety items. It may travel between several jobs in one day. This is not the same as commuting to one workplace or using a car privately.

Motor trade insurance may be needed where a mobile mechanic repairs, tests, collects, delivers or works on vehicles for payment. A workshop is not required for the activity to count as motor trade work.

Customer vehicle driving should be checked carefully. A mobile mechanic may need to road test a car after repair, move it to a safer place, drive it during diagnosis or take it for further work. Personal cover is not designed for that kind of trade use. The mechanic should know whether and when customer vehicle driving is included.

Tool theft is a major issue. Mobile mechanics often keep expensive equipment in a van. If tools are stolen, damaged or lost, the mechanic may be unable to work. The business should think about how tools are stored, locked and covered when the vehicle is parked.

Public liability can also be important. The mechanic may work on a driveway, in a public space or at another business site. If the work causes injury or property damage away from a road accident, the mechanic needs to understand what cover applies.

When arranging motor trade insurance, the mobile mechanic should describe the service clearly. Diagnostics, servicing, tyre fitting, battery work, roadside repairs, recovery support and collection or delivery may not all create the same risk.

Work location should be assessed before the job starts. A roadside job may have passing traffic, poor lighting and limited space. A customer driveway may have children, pets, uneven surfaces or other vehicles nearby. A depot may have site rules. The mechanic should decide whether the location is safe enough for the work.

Weather can also affect mobile repairs. Rain, wind, poor light or freezing conditions can make some jobs harder or unsafe. The mechanic may need to delay the work, move the vehicle or limit the repair to a temporary fix until the vehicle can be handled properly.

Records help mobile mechanics protect themselves. Job notes should show the customer details, vehicle registration, reported fault, work completed, parts fitted and any advice given. If a customer raises a complaint later, clear records make the situation easier to review. Photos of the vehicle before and after work may also help where damage or condition is disputed.

Security is another daily concern. Tools and parts may be left in the van between jobs. The mechanic should lock the vehicle, avoid leaving valuable kit visible and park sensibly where possible. Good habits can reduce avoidable losses.

If the mobile business employs staff, employers’ liability should be considered. A helper, apprentice or second mechanic can change the business position. Working from a van does not remove employee-related duties.

Roadside repair and recovery work may need different attention from routine mobile servicing. Recovering or repairing broken-down vehicles at the roadside can involve extra exposure. The business should avoid vague descriptions when discussing cover.

The scope of motor trade insurance should be checked again if the mobile mechanic adds new services, stores customer vehicles, hires staff, starts selling cars or moves into a unit. A policy that fitted the first stage of the business may not fit later activity.

Mobile mechanics should not rely on ordinary car cover or assume a garage policy would automatically suit them. Their work is mobile, tool-heavy and often carried out on customer-controlled sites. Cover should follow the real working day, not just the vehicle used to reach the job.
